Purpose

The California Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) will provide grants for small, rural, and Critical Access Hospitals in California for seismic safety compliance.

Award categories:

  • Pre-design - Funds to evaluate buildings as defined in the California Administrative Code, Chapter 6,Article 2, of Part 1, Title 24. Review of as-built conditions, seismic evaluations, and materials testing and condition assessment projects/reports
  • Design - Funds for activities necessary to inform construction project needs and design, such as architectural and engineering services
  • Construction - Funds budgeted construction activity including general and special contractor services, inspectors, project management, and other related construction delivery functions
Eligibility

Eligible applicants in California include:

  • Small hospitals defined as those having less than 50 beds per the federal definition found in the Medicare Rural Hospital Flexibility Program Sec. 1820. [42 U.S.C. 1395i –4]
  • Rural hospitals defined as those with a rural or frontier designation in HCAI's Medical Service Study Areas
  • Critical Access Hospitals designated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services

$2,400,000 is available in fiscal year 2022-2023 and $2,100,000 in fiscal year 2023-2024.
