Purpose

This program, HELP, offers loan repayment assistance for certain healthcare professionals in Hawaii in return for at least 2 years of service in rural and other medically underserved areas of the state.

Eligibility

Applicants must be (or working to become) a healthcare professional licensed or otherwise certified in Hawai'i who provides clinical care to human patients living in Hawai'i and accepts public insurance for at least 30% of their patient care claims.

Interns, residents, or fellows currently in professional training in one of the recognized health professions may apply. Terms of loan repayment and other HELP programmatic terms and conditions may differ from already licensed or certified healthcare professionals. Residents do not need to be located in Hawaii as long as they commit to practice in Hawaii upon completion.

Amount of funding

$50,000 per year for Primary care MD, DO, APRN, PA, behavioral health professionals, and rural specialist physicians working full-time

$25,000 per year for Primary care MD, DO, APRN, PA, behavioral health professionals, and rural specialist physicians working at least half-time

$25,000 per year for other qualified full-time professionals

$12,500 per year for residents who agree to practice in Hawaii upon completion
