Opioid Settlement Fund Community Grant Program
South Dakota Departments of Health and Social Services are offering grants for organizations working to abate and alleviate the impacts of the opioid crisis and co-occurring substance use challenges in South Dakota communities.
There are 3 grant categories for this opportunity.
- Resource funding to support local projects with one-time expenses
- Organizational projects that are community driven and have local or regional impact
- Transformative projects will receive capital or seed funding to establish new resources or fill critical service gaps on a large scale
Approved uses of funds include activities under the strategies:
- Treat opioid use disorder (OUD)
- Intervention - Connect people who need help to the help they need
- Support people in treatment and recovery and reduce stigma
- Address the needs of criminal justice involved persons
- Address the needs of women who are or may become pregnant
- Prevent over prescribing and ensure proper prescribing of opioids
- Prevent misuse of opioids
- Harm reduction - Prevent overdose deaths and other harm
- Education and support for first responders
- Leadership, planning, and coordination
- Training
- Research
Rural behavioral health workforce, MAT training, and telehealth in rural communities are among the approved uses of funds.
South Dakota based organizations are eligible to apply. Examples of eligible organizations can be found in the funding framework.
Resource funding grants:
- Award ceiling: Up to $5,000
- Project period: Less than a year (fast implementation)
Organizational grants:
- Award ceiling: Up to $50,000
- Project period: 1 year
Transformative grants:
- Award ceiling: More than $50,000
- Project period: Multi-year (based on need)

Organizational grant applications may be submitted at any time and are reviewed twice per year, with deadlines of March 31 and November 30.
Applications for Resource grants are accepted on a rolling basis. Transformative grants are not currently being offered.
