Purpose

This educational opportunity provides Indigenous-centered, cross-cultural health research education and training for students, researchers and health professionals working in tribal health. The program seeks to increase capacity for conducting culturally responsive and respectful health research that addresses the unique settings and health needs of Alaska Native and American Indian people.

Focus areas include:

  • Understanding Indigenous worldviews and how to apply the Two-Eyed Seeing framework
  • Conducting equitable and ethical health research with Alaska Native/American Indian communities and people
  • Applying appropriate and respectful research methods (Indigenous and Western) to co-produce knowledge
  • Understanding the historical and cultural context in which health research is being conducted

The program will take place in May 2024 at Alaska Pacific University in Anchorage, Alaska and consists of 3 1-week courses. Course topics and dates are as follows:

  • Week 1: Advanced Research (May 6 - 10, 2024) - designed for experienced researchers and health professionals
  • Week 2: Research Ethics (May 13 - 17, 2024) - designed for all levels of research experience
  • Week 3: Introductory Research (May 20 - 24, 2024) - designed for individuals interested in health research with little to no experience

Students, researchers, and health professionals working in tribal health are eligible to apply.

Amount of funding

The cost per course for weeks 1 and 2 is $300. There is no cost to participate in the week 3 course. Individuals may register to participate in 1 or more courses. Enrollment is limited to 50 participants for each course.

Scholarships are available on a limited basis.
