Purpose

This program (MatCare) offers grants to provide support to accredited nurse midwifery programs to train nurse midwives through trainee scholarships, stipends, curriculum enhancement, and community-based training. The program is designed to grow and diversify the maternal and perinatal health nursing workforce that are prepared to address and reduce maternal mortality and morbidity in rural, tribal, and underserved urban communities.

Program goals:

  • Increase the number of Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM) and diversify the maternal and perinatal health nursing workforce
  • Enhance maternal health training to better address maternal mental health, maternal mortality, and morbidity risk factors
  • Strengthen community-based training partnerships
Eligibility

Eligible applicants include:

  • Accredited schools of nursing
  • Nursing centers
  • Academic health centers
  • State and local governments
  • Other public and private nonprofit entities determined appropriate by the Secretary, such as HRSA- supported health centers and Rural Health Clinics
  • Domestic community-based organizations, tribes, and tribal organizations, if otherwise eligible
