Successful mobile health programs require a range of vehicles, equipment, and materials to deliver services in rural areas.

When planning to purchase a mobile health unit, programs should consider the model that best supports their service goals. For example, some mobile units allow health services to be delivered directly in the mobile vehicle, while others use a portable model that allows providers to move equipment into homes, schools, and other service locations. The vehicle type should align with the program’s needs and services offered, including adequate space for staff, patients, and equipment.

Programs must also account for the terrain in their service area by choosing vehicles that can navigate local conditions, such as unpaved or gravel roads, mountainous routes, or remote areas requiring four-wheel drive. Programs should also consider the location’s varying climates and seasons, ensuring vehicles can operate reliably in conditions such as snow, ice, heavy rain, extreme heat, or flooding that may affect access and safety.

Mobile health programs planning to acquire a vehicle should consider whether a new or pre-owned unit best fits the budget and operational timeline, weighing cost savings against the potential need for refurbishment or technology updates. Programs should also budget for costs beyond the initial vehicle purchase, including the cost of ongoing repairs, maintenance, and cleaning.

Screening and Monitoring Devices

Many mobile health programs rely on screening tools and monitoring devices, such as blood pressure and pulse oxygen monitors, glucose meters, digital scales, and activity trackers. Some pharmaceutical or medical equipment manufacturers provide patients with free glucose monitors, which providers can work with distributors to obtain. However, to ensure patient participation, rural programs may need to budget for providing mobile devices, such as smartphones or tablets, for use in patient homes or on mobile units. In addition, patients and providers may need training on proper use of these devices, including their connection to patient portals and mobile applications.

Imaging Equipment

Mobile medical imaging, including mobile X-rays, ultrasounds, CT scans, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), can help bring needed care to remote communities, disaster zones, or individuals who require immediate attention. Using and maintaining this equipment requires skilled staff and a strong, reliable power supply. Mobile units can consider technology such as solar panels to provide power for imaging equipment in remote areas.
