LGBT Poverty in the United States: A Study of Differences Between Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Groups
First in a series of reports examining the poverty rates and economic disparities of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. Using data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey, this report provides estimates and compares the number of LGBT and cisgender people living in poverty in rural and urban communities. Poverty rates are further identified by sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI), race, ethnicity, and by state. Discusses the effect of disability status, education level, health, marital status, and employment status on poverty rates.
