Models to Treat Substance Use Disorders

Several evidence-based and promising approaches exist for treating substance use disorders (SUD). SUD treatment can be delivered in different settings, based on individual needs:

  • Outpatient Treatment: Healthcare services where a patient is not required to stay overnight at a hospital or treatment center.
  • Inpatient or Residential Treatment: Comprehensive care provided in a hospital or treatment center. Residential settings vary in structure, program length, and whether they contain detoxification services.

Detoxification is the process of removing addictive substances from the body and can be medically managed or non-medical. Treatment programs tend to begin with intensive services and then transition to outpatient settings to maintain recovery.
