Program Overview: The Council for
Prevention collaborates with leaders, professionals, and community members to deliver
evidence-based substance use and mental health prevention programs and trainings in rural New
York. The Council facilitates school-based
programs, such as
Too Good for Drugs, which
educates students in grades K-12 on topics such as alcohol, cannabis, nicotine, and illicit
substances. They also educate 9th-12th graders in Teen Mental Health First Aid which teaches
about mental health, knowing signs and symptoms of worsening mental health, how to help a friend,
and how to recognize overdose. The Council also provides programs and training for adults, such
as parenting programs,
educational tools for teachers and caregivers, and crisis intervention and trauma response
trainings to law enforcement officials, schools, healthcare and community-based agencies.
The Council's Hope & Healing Recovery Center provides support and recovery services, life skills, support meetings, and more.
The Council hosts Narcan trainings for the community in partnership with the Alliance for Positive Health and offers other evidence-based trainings to increase education and awareness about substance use and mental health.
