Models to Overcome Transportation Barriers
Some populations, such as people with complex health conditions or mobility issues, or people living in frontier communities, may have increased challenges to accessing safe, affordable, and appropriate transportation to and from healthcare and social services providers. Even when rural community members have access to transportation, long travel distances can affect their health by increasing stress (the result of taking time away from work, school, and other commitments) and can impact how they make decisions about healthcare. Some rural programs and agencies have implemented innovative models to meet the needs of these populations.
